The DSL modem supplied by your local telephone company will grant one unique IP address; therefore you can connect only one computer directly to your Broadband Express DSL modem. You can connect more than one computer via the use of a Router. Please note that PenTeleData Technical Support does not offer support for personal home networking equipment of any kind, including routers, wireless products, hubs, game consoles, etc. Please contact the manufacturer of your particular device for additional assistance. In addition, you may be required to disconnect any additional networking equipment when speaking to our Technical Support Department in order to assist in the troubleshooting process.

Yes. Our Broadband DSL gives you direct access to the Internet. For Technical Support regarding your VPN connection, you will need to contact the administrators of your VPN, as PenTeleData does not provide technical support for VPN connections.

No. Servers of any type (FTP, Email, Web, etc.) are against the Terms of Service (TOS) for Residential Accounts. If you wish to run a server with your service, please call us at (800) 281-3564 and speak to the Commercial Sales Department for more information and pricing.

No. Since a telephone line is required to send a Fax transmission, this is obviously not possible with a DSL modem, because your computer is not directly connected to the phone line. However, there are several commercial services on the Internet that offer faxing services over the Internet via the use of email; please consult a search engine for more details.

Also, if you still have a Dial-Up Fax modem in your computer, you can configure it to be enabled only when you need to send faxes. This feature is usually installed as an available printer in the system and you simply "print" to the fax driver to send faxes.

PenTeleData Technical Support does not offer assistance in any way for sending faxes using your Broadband DSL Modem service, nor do we support sending fax transmissions with your Dial-up modem.

Dial-up access is not included with a standard Broadband DSL account unless you have specifically requested the addition of Dial-Up access. This service is available for an additional fee; please contact PenTeleData's Customer Service Department at (800) 281-3564. However, PenTeleData UNLEASHED is available to all Broadband DSL customers at no additional fee.

No. In fact, you will not need to dial any number at all! With Broadband DSL Service, you will be automatically connected to the Internet. Once your computer has been configured with the information provided to you by PenTeleData, you will be connected to the Internet as soon as your computer has started.

If you are a Palmerton Telephone  customer you cannot use any modem other than the one provided with your Broadband DSL package. If you are an Ironton Telephone customer you can use a 3rd party ADSL modem, but neither PenTeleData Technical Support, nor Ironton Telephone can offer assistance with 3rd-party ADSL modems.

While it stands to reason that the more powerful your computer is, the more benefits you stand to gain with a DSL modem, you can use a DSL modem with just about any computer system as long as it has a functioning Ethernet card OR USB capability AND meets the minimum system requirements as shown below:

Yes. Presently, Broadband DSL offers voice and data over the same telephone line without affecting your other telephone services or features.

The required connection software is already installed on most new computers (computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OSX) along with a web browser and email program. Older computers may require additional software, which will be provided to you. The DSL installer will set up the computer to connect to your Broadband DSL Modem when they arrive to install your modem. To set up your computer to use a USB connection, additional software will be required and provided with your Broadband DSL modem.

Although DSL services can provide much higher data speeds than ISDN, DSL is offered on a "best effort" basis with no throughput speed guarantee. The DSL modem for Broadband service provides data transmission speeds that are more than 7.5 times faster than ISDN. While DSL's "always on" connection, which requires no dial-up sequence, ISDN requires a dial-up connection. Unlike ISDN, normal voice telephone service is not affected by power outages with DSL service.

Standard telephone wires consist of a pair of copper wires. These copper wires are not only capable of providing standard phone conversations but also access to the Internet. Phone wires can also provide a greater capacity of bandwidth than normally demanded by your voice or dial-up connection. DSL is a distance sensitive technology; the closer you are to your telephone company, the better your speed and connection. While it stands to reason that with voice transmission there is no distance limitations. Voice transmissions work with small amplifiers and loading coils to boost the transmission. However with DSL service, the equipment is not compatible. The normal standard of distance from the central office is 18,000 feet.

A DSL modem is not a true modem (which stands for Modulator/DEModulator). It is actually a state-of-the-art digital device that communicates using 10Base-T network protocols and provides an "always on" connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is an "always on" Broadband Internet connection. With Broadband DSL Service, you can access all of the resources of the Internet whenever you choose, without busy signals, or connection/disconnection delays or interruptions. DSL modems use digital coding techniques to employ the additional capacity of your standard telephone line. A complex web page that can take a minute to download using a standard dial-up modem will arrive in seconds with a Broadband DSL connection. For small businesses, Broadband DSL can be a much more cost-effective data service than a slower ISDN or more expensive T1 line. The service is billed on a monthly basis, usually for a fixed price for unlimited usage.
