On September 11, 2001, when the first plane hit, Adam Mayblum was working for the May Davis Group investment firm on the 87th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower. He escaped down a stairwell with a wet piece of his T-shirt tied around his face. In the days following, an email he had written to family and friends went viral. His intention was to let them know he was safe. His words became a firsthand account of his personal testimonial, from walking down the stairs past the firefighters, escaping the building, and looking back as the towers fell. He received thousands of responses from people he had never met.
Today marks a quarter of a century since 9/11. Like Adam and for those of us old enough to remember the details as they happened, it’s almost certain that we have a story to tell about where we were that morning and the people who were part of our day. Some of us at PenTeleData sat with coworkers in a conference room, waiting to know more about what was unfolding. Some of us were home with our young children. Some of us continued to help customers. Some of us anxiously awaited calls from loved ones, knowing that telephone lines were overwhelmed with volume. It seemed implausible that the United States of America could be attacked on our own soil. For Americans who were born after 9/11 or who are too young to remember, please know that the day was unlike anything most of us had ever experienced prior, but the days that followed are also very much worth mentioning. No matter our individual memories, one thing is certain: we came together as a country to grieve together, help one another, and with a shared hope for the future of our nation. That’s our collective story. That’s what makes us the United States of America.
Today, as we both grieve the losses of twenty-five years ago and recognize our country’s 250th anniversary, we’ll all take time to pause this morning. We’ll pause with sadness. We’ll pause in unity. We’ll pause with gratitude for the heroes that day. We’ll pause to honor our collective memories. Most importantly, we’ll pause because we will never forget.
