How to Setup Your Newsreader

This document details how a customer should configure their newsreader software to utilize the PenTeleData Usenet server.

Outlook Express

1. Open Outlook Express by either selecting the "Outlook Express" icon from the windows "Desktop" or by selecting "Outlook Express" icon from the "Start" menu.

2. In the Outlook Express window, select "Accounts" from the "Tools" menu at the top.

3. The "Internet Accounts" dialog box will now open. To add the PenTeleData Usenet server, click on "Add" and select "News."

4. "The "Internet Connection Wizard" will now open and ask you for your "Display Name." Enter your name as you would like it to be displayed when you respond or post a Usenet message and press "Next."

5. In the box labeled "News (NNTP) Server," enter "usenet.ptd.net" in all lower-case letters (without the quotation marks). Place a check in the box below labeled "My news server requires me to log on" and press "Next."

6. In the box labeled "Account Name," enter the username and password for the account you will be using to access the Usenet server.

Standard accounts (Dial-up, cable modem, and DSL) must use their complete PenTeleData email address as their username (i.e. Username: johndoe@ptd.net ) and the corresponding password to login to the PenTeleData Usenet server.

If you have an "Individual Usenet Account" or "Commercial Usenet Account," you must use the Usenet login and password that was assigned to you. Please ensure that you are using your "complete" login including "@ptd.net" (i.e. Username: news00000005@ptd.net ).

7. The last screen of the "Internet Connection Wizard" will now appear. Simply click on the "Finish" button.

8. Finally, click the "Close" button on the "Internet Accounts" window. Your newsreader has now been set up to access the PenTeleData Usenet server.

Free Agent

  1. In the Free Agent window, select "General Preferences" from the "Options" menu at the top.
  2. The Free Agent "General Preferences" dialog box will now appear. To configure your Usenet settings, select the tab labeled "User" at the top.
  3. In the box labeled "Email-Address", enter your complete full-access email address in all lower-case letters. For example, johndoe@ptd.net. In the box labeled "Full Name", enter your name as you would like it to be displayed when you respond or post a Usenet message. Below, under "News Server Authorization", place a check in the box labeled "Server requires authentication login". In the box labeled "User Name", enter your news access login.
  4. Standard accounts (Dial-up, cable modem, and DSL) must use their complete PenTeleData email address as their username (i.e. Username: johndoe@ptd.net) and the corresponding password to login to the PenTeleData Usenet server.
  5. If you have an "Individual Usenet Account" or "Commercial Usenet Account", you must use the Usenet login and password that was assigned to you. Please ensure that you are using your "complete" login including "@ptd.net" (i.e. Username: news00000005@ptd.net).
  6. To have Free Agent save your password, place a check in the box labeled "Remember Password between sessions". When you are finished, your screen should resemble the window below.
  7. Next, click on the tab labeled "System" at the top of the "General Preferences" window. Place your cursor in the box labeled "News Server" by clicking in the box one time with the mouse button. Enter "usenet.ptd.net" in all lower-case letters (without the quotation marks). For the "Email Server" enter "promail.ptd.net" in all lower-case letters (without the quotation marks). When you are finished, your screen should resemble the window below.
  8. Finally, click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the "General Preferences" window. Your newsreader has now been set up to access the PenTeleData Usenet server.

Thunderbird 3.0

  1. Select "Account Settings..." from the "Tools" menu.
  2. Select "Add Other Account..." from the "Account Actions" button.
  3. Place a dot in the circle next to "Newsgroup account" and click "Continue".
  4. In the box labeled "Your Name" enter your name as you would like it to be displayed when you respond or post a Usenet message. In the box labeled "Email Address" enter your complete full-access e-mail address in all lower-case letters (i.e. username@ptd.net ) and click "Continue".
  5. In the box labeled "Newsgroup Server" enter "usenet.ptd.net" in all lower-case letters (without the quotation marks) and click "Continue".
  6. In the box labeled "Account Name" enter "usenet.ptd.net" and click "Continue".
  7. The final screen of the wizard will now appear. Simply click on the "Done" button. Your newsreader has now been set up to access the PenTeleData Usenet server.
  8. Click "OK" to close the accounts window.
  9. Upon your next connection to the news server you will be prompted for your username and password.
