PenTeleData’s "Mail-Me" accounts offer a low cost solution for users who need only E-mail access. A "Mail-Me" account does not provide the user with the ability to surf webpage’s, a "Mail-Me" user may however, dial into any local PenTeleData access number; and connect to the PenTeleData E-mail server, to send and receive E-mail. A "Mail-Me" account can be accessed in the following ways: Customers WITH an existing internet connection: -Utilizing the "My PenTeleData Webmail" link on the PenTeleData homepage, www.ptd.net -A POP3 E-mail program such as Outlook Express, Eudora, etc. Customers choosing this option would need to input the name of PenTeleData's incoming and outgoing mail server. PenTeleData's E-mail server (for both incoming and outgoing) is "promail.ptd.net" (without the quotations). Customers will also need to enable SMTP Authentication. Detailed setup instructions for a variety of mail programs can be found on the "Customer Support" area of www.ptd.net Customers WITHOUT an existing internet connection: -A direct dial-up connection using a VT100 compatible terminal program such as HyperTerminal in Windows, or programs such as Zterm and Kermit on the Macintosh operating system. Then, using a text-based, ASCII E-mail program such as "PINE" to send and receive mail. Instructions for this method can be found below. Using the VT100 compatible terminal program, you will need to configure it for the following: 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and VT100 terminal emulation. To log in and send or receive E-mail, you will need to use your VT100 compatible software to dial into the PenTeleData number that is local for you. A complete list of access numbers can be found by pointing your browser to www.ptd.net.
1.When connecting to a PenTeleData local access number, you will be prompted for your “Username:.” Enter your Mail-Me name as it appears on your account application (everything before the @ptd.net of your E-mail address) and press the “Enter” or “Return” key on your keyboard. You will then be prompted for your “Password:.” Type the corresponding password for your Mail-Me account and press the “Enter” or “Return” key on your keyboard. This will take you directly to the PenTeleData “login:” screen. 2. Once connected, you will be presented with the window below. Enter your Mail-Me name as it appears on your account application (everything before the @ptd.net of your E-mail address) and press the “Enter” or “Return” key on your keyboard. You will then be prompted for your “Password:.” Enter the corresponding password for you Mail-Me account and press the “Enter” or “Return” key on your keyboard. Note: Your password will not appear. 3. When connected, you will have the following choice selections. Number “1” being PINE and “Q” to end, select the number “1” on your keyboard to continue. 4. If this is not your first time using Pine, skip to Step #5. If this is your first time using Pine you will see the following screen. Press “E” on your keyboard to continue. 5. Verify the username is correct in the space after “ENTER LOGIN NAME:,” then press the “Enter” or “Return” key on your keyboard. 6. Re-enter your password in the space after “ENTER PASSWORD:,” then press the “Enter” or “Return” key on your keyboard 7. You must now select the folder you wish to view, press “L” on the keyboard to select “FOLDER LIST.” 8. Now press the “Enter” key on your keyboard to select the “Mail” option. 9. Press the “Enter” key on your keyboard to select the “INBOX” option. The PINE window will look like this (the Folder and number of messages will be displayed in the upper right corner). The Bold characters at the bottom of the window are the available commands. To navigate to different options, use the arrow keys (up, down, left, and right) on your keyboard, and press “Enter” or “Return” key on your keyboard, once your choice is highlighted. To use and navigate through PINE, simply read the commands listed at the bottom of the window, (use O for Other Commands that are available) or use the “?” option for help. When reading the commands, you may see one that looks like this: “ PINE is a simple way of sending and receiving E-mail. It is important to remember that all of this mail is kept on our mail server, not on your machine, and unless you manually delete a message it will stay on our server. If you are not careful, you can reach the 50MB-storage limit and you may be charged. Additionally, files that are attached to E-mail messages are not viewable in PINE, so those pictures your friend has sent you will not be viewable using this type of account. |
