Questions
Answers
Q:
What is E-mail Storage Space (ESS)?
A:
E-mail Storage Space (ESS) is the total amount of data, in MB (megabytes), which your e-mail messages are occupying on our server. Each character in an e-mail message is equal to one byte of storage space. Attachments within an e-mail message (pictures, sounds, etc.) can contain significantly more data and therefore take up more E-mail Storage Space.
Q:
How much E-mail Storage Space am I allowed?
A:
Each residential account has 50MB (fifty megabytes or approximately fifty million characters) of complimentary disk space allocated for E-mail Storage Space. Anything over the 50MB will be billed at a rate of $1.00 per each additional megabyte, per month.
Q:
What happens if I exceed my complimentary 50MB of disk space?
A:
You will still continue to receive e-mail as normal. However, anything over 50MB will be billed at a rate of $1.00 per each additional megabyte, per month.
Q:
How is my E-mail Storage Space calculated?
A:
E-mail Storage Space is calculated by using the average of the total amount of data that your e-mail is occupying on our server over a thirty day period.
Please note that any files that reside in your Personal Storage Space do NOT count towards your complimentary 50MB of E-mail Storage Space. For more information on your
Personal Storage Space click
HERE.
Q:
Will I be notified if I exceed my allotted E-mail Storage Space?
A:
As a courtesy, PenTeleData will make an effort to notify you when you have used all of your complimentary 50MB of E-mail Storage Space. These notices will be sent to you via e-mail and are automatically generated by our system when an e-mail account has reached 90% of your complimentary 50MB of E-mail Storage Space.
Q:
I am receiving e-mail notifications that I am nearing my 50MB of complimentary E-mail Storage Space. What exactly does this mean?
A:
These notifications are automatically generated and sent by our system when you have used 90% of your complimentary E-mail Storage Space. To avoid extra storage charges, you should remove any e-mail from your E-mail Storage Space that you may no longer need.
Please note that your current E-mail Storage Space usage is an average which is calculated over the last 30 days. Once you remove e-mail from your E-mail Storage Space, it may take some time for the average amount of storage space to drop below the level at which these notifications are automatically sent.
Q:
How do I check how much E-mail Storage Space I am using?
A:

Q:
How much will I be charged if I exceed my complimentary 50MB of E-mail Storage Space?
A:
You will be charged $1.00 per each additional megabyte over your complimentary 50MB (megabyte) of E-mail Storage Space, per month.
Q:
How will additional E-mail Storage Space charges appear on my bill?
A:
Additional Personal Storage Space and additional E-mail Storage Space charges are combined as one amount on your monthly invoice. Your full-access account includes 15MB (megabyte) of Personal Storage Space and 50MB of E-mail Storage Space for a combined amount of 65MB (megabyte).
If you are billed by one of PenTeleData's partner companies, your additional Personal Storage Space and additional E-mail Storage Space charges will be included on your invoice.
If you are a PenTeleData customer, your bill will be in one of two formats: To view an example of an invoice in the new format, with incurred additional Personal Storage Space and additional E-mail Storage Space charges, click
HERE. Any additional disk space charges will appear on your bill under the heading of "Add. Disk storage."
To view an example of an invoice in the old format, with incurred additional Personal Storage Space and additional E-mail Storage Space charges, click
HERE. Any additional disk space charges will appear on your bill under the heading of "Additional Data usage." On your bill, "Qty." is the amount of additional MB (megabytes) of disk space used that is over your complimentary storage space for the current billing period.

Q:
Can I limit the size of my E-mail Storage Space so I will not be charged?
A:
Yes. This can be done by manually configuring your e-mail quota. Your e-mail quota is the amount of storage space on our server that your messages are allowed to occupy. To change your e-mail quota, point your web browser to
http://www.ptd.net/
and click on the "Account Management" link which is located on the right side of the page. You will be required to provide the e-mail name (everything before the @ptd.net) and password for the account you wish to change. Once logged in, click on "Mail Quota Setting." You will need to enter your current e-mail password in the box provided and then select a new e-mail quota. For example, if you want to be sure you will not exceed the complimentary 50MB of E-mail Storage Space, enter 50MB as your new quota. On this page, it is also possible to change the maximum number of e-mail messages which your e-mail account can accept. All PenTeleData e-mail accounts are configured to allow 100MB or 3,000 messages by default.
Q:
My E-mail Storage Space usage appears high, what would cause this?
A:
High E-mail Storage Space usage can be caused by a number of reasons:
The most common cause for additional E-mail Storage Space charges is that the customer's e-mail software has been incorrectly configured to leave all e-mail messages on the server after they have been retrieved and read. To resolve this problem, please call our Technical Support Department at (800)281-3564 and speak with a technician. We can then review your settings and make the appropriate changes within your e-mail software, if necessary.
Another cause would be the amount of e-mail attachments you have received in the past thirty days. Large attachments will take up more space on the server and will therefore increase your amount of E-mail Storage Space.
Also, unused mailboxes associated with your account can still receive e-mail. Whether these messages were intended to reach that destination or fall under the category of unsolicited e-mail (SPAM), they still take up disk space. This disk space is included in the calculation of your E-mail Storage Space. If you have additional e-mail boxes, it is important to check them regularly to ensure that they are below their complimentary 50MB of E-mail Storage Space. Lastly, if you use "My PenTeleData Webmail" located on our web page at
http://www.ptd.net
to access your e-mail, you may have previously deleted messages still residing in your "Trash" folder. Just as deleting a file on your computer moves the item to the trash folder, deletion of an item in "My PenTeleData Webmail" moves the message to the "Trash" folder. Since PenTeleData is still storing data for you in this "Trash" folder, an accumulation of e-mail here can result in additional storage charges. To make sure that you are not being charged e-mail storage space for already deleted messages, simply log in to "My PenTeleData Webmail" and click on the link titled "Empty Trash." This will ensure that all the e-mail you had previously deleted will be completely removed from our server.
Q:
What else could I do to keep my E-mail Storage Space low when using "My PenTeleData Webmail"?
A:
Remember to log in and delete all unwanted e-mail regularly from your "Inbox." "Trash," "Sent-Mail," or other folders that you have created.
Q:
I have another question about my E-mail Storage Space that was not answered here. How can I get additional help?
